barbershop

The Local Data Company's latest Leisure and Retail report revealed that more hairdressing, barbers and beauty business opened in 2016 than ever before, overtaking tearooms, coffee shops and take-aways in popularity.

With beauty salons, barbers, beauty and nail salons occupying four out of the 10 top slots, the hair and beauty industry combined saw the highest number of new business openings in Great Britains. By contrast, the greatest number of closures were suffered by banks, convenience stores, women's clothing, pubs, fashion shops, newsagents and Post Office services. The National Hairdressing Federations' CEO, Hilary Hall commented: "Not only does the LDC report unveil the explosive growth in the number in 2016, it also provides concrete proof that salons and barbershops are facing ever-increasing competition.

If they are to survive in such a tough marketplace, business owners will need to work harder than ever before on their brand and client experience to differentiate their business from the many others out there.

BHBA 2016 Winners

The best business brains in hairdressing have been named, as finalists for the annual industry awards are revealed.

For the last 19 years, Hairdressers Journal International has celebrated the business brains behind the country’s most trailblazing salons at the British Hairdressing Business Awards. The awards seek to find and celebrate the very best salon businesses in the country – an industry which contributes an estimated £7bn to the British economy and one which employs more than 300,000 people. With 17 categories celebrating all aspects of the business side of hairdressing, the awards are a proven platform for raising a salon’s profile. Even finalising in one of the prestigious categories marks a business out as one of the finest providers in the country; a win catapults them to the very top, providing unrivalled recognition that they are at the pinnacle of their profession and raising their profile to give an edge over competitors. Says HJ’s Executive Director, Jayne Lewis-Orr: “Promoting professionalism, innovation and excellence, the British Hairdressing Business Awards recognise those individuals and teams who work tirelessly to raise the profile and stature of this industry, and make it one of which we can all be proud.

“Each year we’re amazed by the quality and diversity of applications. We’re proud to support an industry which continues to go from strength to strength and give credit to those achievers who are really making a difference to the business of hairdressing. As a visual industry, we’re quick to recognise those that create beautiful work, but we believe that it’s equally important to recognise those often-unsung heroes who work tirelessly behind the scenes and on the salon floor to make a tangible difference to the lives of their clients and team members.” For winners, it’s not just about a trophy and a stamp of approval – the awards make a real tangible difference to business. Last year, Andrew Price of the eponymous Welsh salon chain scooped the ultimate accolade of Business Director of the Year. He says: “[This win] represented validation from my peers and professionals within the industry for whom I have immense respect and whose success I aspire to emulate. From the perspective of the Andrew Price Group, the award brings with it a gravitas to support our claims of excellence. I have never been more inspired to raise the bar for my business and I actively encourage the same of all my employees.”

A win can also inspire the team, as Chloe Ascott from Hare & Bone, who won Salon Stylist of the Year in 2016 can attest. “Being recognised for my contribution to the industry was amazing, it’s also pushed me to the next level with my career at Hare & Bone. I have since been promoted to art director for the company, enjoying time with my clients, educating our apprentices and spending time with the team.” The categories at the awards cover all aspects of the business of hairdressing, from managers and directors to juniors and stylists. It also covers the efforts of salons in marketing, retail, customer care and even salon design – in short, it identifies and recognises every aspect of running a thriving salon.

franco trinchinetti

“For this collection, I wanted to highlight the beauty and versatility of hair through simple styling, minimal product and classic techniques – to literally ‘deconstruct’ that polished perfection of a modern hair shot and take it back to the bare basics. Natural texture and movement were key words on the day of the shoot and we kept make–up stripped back to ensure that the hair took centre stage.”

coiffure
